Today is United Way’s Day of Action, and you can make a huge difference in your local community by signing up to be a volunteer reader, tutor, or mentor for a young child. Locally, United Way funds important programs including Goodwill’s free tax program and financial literacy course. Without the support of United Way, many programs would not be possible – I encourage you to help by donating hours to help those in need.
You can sign up today at Logli in Rockford (Charles Street) and Loves Park (Harlem Road) from 11am to 2pm. Make a difference in a child’s life today: live united.
We’ve had a busy month of December in the office! Chady (my office mate) and I both worked this past Saturday on projects to help the community… take a look:
Fifteen volunteers came to Goodwill’s Mission Services Center this past Saturday to learn tax law for the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program at Goodwill. Many of the volunteers were returning from last year, and I was excited to see a few friendly new faces as well! Many great companies were represented, and we cannot thank the community enough for helping out this great program! Alpine Bank, Exelon – Byron Plant, and Rock Valley College, to name a few, were splendidly represented with dedicated and energetic volunteers. Some volunteers also brought a friend, which is a great way to expand their positive impact on the community. If you’d like to sign up to volunteer, call (815) 987-6205, and bring a friend along!
Empty Stocking Program: RRStar
Chady coordinated Goodwill’s participation in the Empty Stocking Program this year, and here’s his “field report” on last Saturday’s event:
Having the opportunity to volunteer at the Rockford Register Star’s Empty Stocking Program distribution this past Saturday was great. I’d had prior experience in working at Christmas Toy distribution events, but this one blew me away by how well organized it was. Although it was very busy, with lots of volunteers and registrants coming through, everything was in order and the process was very smooth. To be able to see toys go out to children in need, so that they can have a brighter holiday season was a blessing and a wonderful opportunity. I’m grateful to the Register Star for allowing Goodwill to take part and for everyone at the State Street and Machesney Park stores for putting in the time and effort to make it work.
Also, we’re going to add another post to the blog each week on Mondays to highlight classes that will be taking place at Goodwill’s Mission Services Center. Watch for January’s listings in a couple weeks – there are some great opportunities for you to take advantage of. Resolve to learn new things in the new year!
Goodwill is looking for a great team of volunteers to help out at VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites during the upcoming tax season. You don’t have to have a bit of experience, and we have all the training and resources you need!
The tax sites have two positions that need volunteers: tax preparers and site assistants.
If you like numbers, computers, instant gratification, a fun and upbeat environment, and the power to change lives, you’re a great fit for the tax preparer position.
If you like interacting with people, performing clerical tasks, and being the smiling face that people look to when they need help, you’re a great fit for the site assistant position.
Training begins the first week in December, so click the links below to learn more and sign up today! We have tax sites located in Rockford, Machesney Park, and DeKalb.
